I have two boxes sitting on my desk....one containing a new pump, the other....a CGM and several boxes of sensors.
My insurance company covered everything 100%....6 months ago this was not even a possibility. There was not even a slight chance they would cover it even partially.
It's amazing how quickly things have changed. I have an appointment to get all hooked up next Thursday. I can't even begin to explain how exciting this is, and how surprised I am that I got one! I never really thought this would happen and certainly not this soon.

Update
I just got a call from the Medtronic peeps, the insurance company approved my new pump...the one with the fancy software that communicates with the CGM etc etc...so they are sending that out to me tomorrow. However, they are still waiting for the insurance company to decide wither or not they will cover the actual CGM.
So how does this make sense? Why approve me for the new pump model the one that is made specifically to work with the CGM and cover it 100%, but drag your feet on the actual CGM...I'm hoping it's a good sign? Back to waiting....
Crossing fingers....

Still Waiting
So the ball is rolling on the CGM stuff....just waiting to hear back from Medtronic, should be any day now...I've been so busy, I really haven't thought about it too much, but I just looked at the calendar and saw the post it note I stuck to it with the name and phone number of the company liaison and realized I should be getting a call from her any time now.
Crossing my fingers.

Falling Off the Wagon
So, I've fallen off the blogging wagon the past few....ok almost 5 months. Things have been very busy - what else is new. But I do have possibly exciting news, my insurance company is now covering CGM if you meet the right criteria. It appears the I will most likely meet it and be approved :D
I'll find out in April if everything has gone through...(crossing fingers)
On the dancing side of things, I've been busy gearing up for recital which will happen in May. My competition team has been busy competing, traveling and performing since January. April and May are very busy for the team we have a competition, convention or performance every weekend for the next two months and the registration forms and rehearsal have been keeping me very busy.
I can't wait for Recital costumes to arrive, I hope everything turns out as cute as it looks in the catalogs. The kids are asking every class now, when they will get their costumes. It's so hard for them to wait, costume day is always exciting, the kids wait for it all year.
I've been trying to test my BG more while teaching or between classes and it's been helping my overall control, though my A1c still has a long way to drop before I'll be happy. I've been catching a ton of lows during classes and at my last appointment my CDE gave me some info from a new book she's been reading on Diabetic Athlete's. There was a special section specifically on dancers and ballet dancers. I've been trying to incorporate some of the info, but it's tough, because even in the book it basically re-iterates what everyone has been telling me all along - it's individual. So it's really up to me to figure this all out. But the CGM can definitely help with this, so I'm really hoping it all goes through and next month I'll be plugging in, yet another piece of diabetic technology.

Count Down to Turkey Day
I'm really looking forward to Thanksgiving this yr. I don't know why exactly, I think I'm feeling a little burned out over work and deep down I know the break will be good for me. I've been a little obsessed with work lately. I can't help it, I love my job!!! :)
I've got a full day of classes tomorrow - all Ballet and then I have a private lesson on Wednesday. The studio is technically closed Wednesday so I'm having the girl come in early since she has a half day at school. After that, I'm picking Kirill up from work and we're heading out of town.
We're spending the holiday at my parents and also visiting with his brother and family. So we get two thanksgiving dinners..luckily not in the same day ;)
I've been looking up different recipes to try out this yr. New spins on some old traditions. I found some yummy looking gluten free alternatives for stuffing and pies and most of them also happen to be low carb too. Perfect for this Celiac suffering, diabetic dancer :)
Here's a link to one of the sites with low carb recipes: http://www.netrition.com/dd_low_carb_recipes.html
They've got some delicious looking pie recipes.
Dlife also has some great recipes and articles for low carb eating.
I can't wait to get into the kitchen with my mom and start cooking up a storm.

Recipes
I've gotten several requests for some of my recipes. I'm actually working on a small recipe book. But in the mean time here's a recipe my sister and I came up with for flourless brownies yummmy!!! ;)
Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cocoa powder
1 cup brown sugar (Splenda brown sugar or other sugar substitute)
1 tsp vanilla
2 large eggs
1/4 corn starch
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup chocolate chips or other dark chocolate morsels
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350
In a medium saucepan, melt butter and add cocoa powder then sugar mixing well until dissolved. Beat eggs and temper with butter/cocoa mix. Remove saucepan from heat, and add the tempered eggs, whisking vigorously. Add salt and corn starch again whisking vigorously. Stir in dark chocolate morsels or choc. chips.
Pour into 8x8 inch baking pan and bake 25 mins. Brownies will seem very soft, but do not over cook, they firm up as they cool.
Optional serve with a dallop of lite cool whip or your favorite low carb topping and enjoy! They are also great on their own...I usually eat mine plain.
They're not carb free, but if you use the sugar substitute and because there is no flour, the carb count is pretty minimal in comparison to a regular brownie. This is also Gluten Free and better then any of the GF mixes I've tried. The GF mixes also cost an arm and a leg. Where this recipe cost will cost you pennies.

Oh that Brie
Yesterday, my hubby had is his yearly review, he called me around 3 to tell me how it went. It was all good news, he said it was all very positive and they gave him a nice raise. Yay!
Luckily it was my night off so I went out to get supplies to make dinner in celebration. I got a nice bottle of wine, some smoked cheddar which Kirill really likes, some brie, gluten free crackers for me, and other necessary groceries.
So dinner turned out awesome, hubby was pleasantly surprised and we had a lovely evening noshing on cheese and wine followed by our main course of roasted veggies (which is actually more substantial and yummy then it sounds, I'll post the recipe). Went to bed at a decent hour for once (10:30) and all through the evening my numbers were great. Pre-bed time I was running a little high, but the correction bolus wizard came up with only 0.5 units.
My hubby jokingly said as he drifted off to sleep that we would have strange dreams because of the cheese and wondered if that myth was really true. Now I can't exactly remember the dreams I had, but I know they were getting really strange. I woke up confused, sweaty and feeling a little sick around 4am, reached over to the night table, grabbing my meter, I half expected to see a low which would be consistent with the trend I've seen lately, but the dryness in my mouth told me otherwise and I was a whopping 270. I took a correction bolus gulped some water and drifted off back to sleep. My alarm went off at 7:30 - and I was in a daze, I reached over and shut it off. I was so tired, there's no way I'm getting up right now I thought to myself and I rolled over and went back to sleep, as my hubby got up to take a shower.
30 mins later, my hubby is kissing my cheek and I can't open my eyes, I can hardly move, it takes everything in me to give any sort of response - I mumble something to him, thinking I'm perfectly articulate and in my head I'm saying "have a good day honey, I love you" when I hear myself and realize, I'm not making any sort of coherent sentence. I force myself to roll over, it feels like I'm literally peeling myself off the bed and I grab my trusty meter. Count down, 5,4,3,2,1.....32mg/dl wow, that's just awesome!
Honey can you get me some juice. Oh wait he's already gone, it took me at least 30 mins to put everything together, I probably responded to him after he had walked out the door. I'm so lost. I want to go back to sleep and the battle in my head begins....sleep - no Trista get your a$$ out of bed and get some juice!....sleep, I'm so sleepy, get the hell out of this bed right now!!!! Obviously I'm here typing this account, so I did in fact make it down the stairs and to the kitchen, yay. Gulped down some OJ - which I hate, drinking in the morning, it gives me a tummy ache, then I sat on the couch until I could see straight.
So I'm now, wondering what happened?? I've been getting low pretty consistently in the middle of the night or waking up low. But having that high threw me off. Was it the cheese? Did my veggies not hit me until then because my digestion slowed from the protein? I'm seriously mystified. It's not like I ate a whole block of brie and besides that I usually eat more protein then that with my dinner. Was it the wine, I only had 1 glass over the course of the evening...it's carb free and technically shouldn't affect my BG.
I was planning to go in to the JDRF office this morning and help out, they are opening the Gingerbread Village this weekend, which is a huge fundraiser, and there are a lot of little things to finish up before Sat. I told them, I probably wouldn't be able to make it because I've got to finish the costumes for my students. (They're performing this Friday). But I would have liked to have gone, though by the time I recovered from the low, I definitely wasn't going to make it.
Speaking of the performance this Friday, I've got some sewing to finish and only a few hours until I head to the studio. It's my low day today too, I always get low when teaching on Thursdays...I ate my candy stash the other day when I got home from teaching, and got hit by a low really suddenly, my dance bag was sitting next to me and it was the quickest thing to treat, anyhow, I need to re-stock that before classes tonight.
The saga continues....
